Hilton's 2026 trends report on meetings and events finds that 49 percent of attendees say meeting new people and bonding with their team is their main reason for attending work events this year, and 45 percent plan to spend their free time at events networking.

People come for people

Hilton's 2026 meetings and events trends report, titled Why We Gather, puts connection at the center of the business events story this year. Forty nine percent of respondents say meeting new people and bonding with their team will be the main reason they attend work events in 2026, and 45 percent say they will proactively use their free time at events to network.

The theme repeats across generations and regions. Even as budgets tighten and agendas compress, the human side of gathering is what attendees say they value most.

Gen Z treats events as career infrastructure

The generational numbers stand out. Fifty two percent of Gen Z attendees go to events specifically to build career advancing relationships, against 45 percent of attendees overall. Seventy eight percent of global Gen Z respondents say they only attend events that support their professional goals, compared with 67 percent of attendees overall.

Younger attendees are also the least patient with events that waste their time. Sixty five percent of respondents say they will leave a work event early if they do not find the content valuable.

The bar for connection is rising

Hilton's data points the same direction as the rest of the industry research this year. Attendees arrive with a clear goal, they measure events by the relationships they leave with, and they expect organizers to make connection easy rather than accidental. For event hosts, the practical takeaway is that the connection experience now deserves the same planning attention as the venue, the content, and the catering.
